A thread for all my fellow Kindle owners.

Any tips/tricks?

What books do you recommend?

and the million dollar question

Do you think the iPad will kill the Kindle?

Yeah, the Kindle is dead, at least in its current form. It's great when a product can do one thing really well; but when I'm traveling or dealing with limited space, convergence devices win every time. I actually use the Kindle app on my iPhone regularly. It's not as good as an actual Kindle; but it's easy enough on the eyes and I always have it with me.

To me, digital forms of books have the same disadvantages as digital forms of music.
I want bindings, paper, and the satisfaction of turning pages.

Having said that - how much does a book cost if purchased through Kindle or a like service?

Kindle books are usually $9.99 - Books on the iPad look like they're going to be closer to the $14.99 price point.

I use my kindle all the time. Its far from dead. Ipad is dead though
It doesn't do anything my Droid doesn't do and costs a fortune.

That's crazy, 15 bucks for a digital book. Maybe if I traveled a lot I'd think differently.
I usually pay less than two dollars for a book, but then again I frequent libraries and thrift stores where they sell them dirt cheap. I hate to even spend any money on a book these days - I am a huge fan of the public library system. It isn't until I've fallen for an author or a series that I feel the need to own my own copy.

I'm gonna jump around and respond to a lot of stuff, it might get nonsensical.

I agree that the Kindle specifically and ereaders in general are far from dead, especially with some of the missing features in iPad 1.0. If I'm gonna spend a thousand dollars for a unit with decent memory, it had better run more than one app at a time. I see it as a replacement for my laptop more than anything so it had better do everything my laptop can.

Renee, I understand your point of view and used to feel the exact same way. I read during my commute to/from work (I take the bus people, don't worry) and carrying the Kindle is so much easier than carrying a book. It's also great for travel, it saved me over Christmas when stuck in the house for 5 straight days. Also it's less stuff around; whether purchasing or going to the library, there's still have a pile of books lying around. I love having this one little contraption to take the place of all that clutter.

Are there any good free books on Amazon? Most of what I've seen look like romance novels - blech!

Another question for the Kindle folks -

Will the increase in new release prices affect your purchasing habits? I have about a dozen books to read due to impulse buying (damn that one-click option). I will probably reassess that habit. Spending ten bucks was no big deal, fifteen seems like so much more.

Amazon.com said on Thursday it is launching a new free Kindle application that will give customers access to over 420,000 books on a range of BlackBerry devices.
